SARAH CHULDENKO
CASUALTIES OF BEAUTY

APRIL 24th - MAY 22nd, 2008

Opening Reception
April 24th, 6 - 8PM

Fake Estate is proud to present Casualties of Beauty, painter Sarah Chuldenko's first solo show. A provocative collision of buoyant breasts, carnivorous plants, topographic flesh, oil slicks, and roadside IED's, Chuldenko's sensational paintings simultaneously depict phoenix totems of creation and destruction, with a hint of irony.

The imagery, while loaded, does not intend to correlate with specific incidents or events, nor does it seek to convey a specific political message. It's a meditation on the state of the world from a distance, filtered through the artist's own imagination and images she absorbs from the media.

In these new works, Chuldenko, a classically trained painter, merges elements of Surrealism and Pop, with aspects of Dutch Master still lives. In Love and Rockets, Chuldenko presents a polymorphic mass made up of oil, smoke, breasts, orchids and corn stalks. The mass, like a black tornado, is in a state perpetual flux, spurning debris, and constantly feeding off of itself.

Sarah Chuldenko was born in Ohio and lives and works in New York. She attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts as well as Cleveland Institute of Art and received an MFA from The New York Academy of Art.
FAKE ESTATE is a new venture launched by Julia Trotta. The unusually small space, a former utility closet in the West Chelsea Arts Building, will house a series of focused, experimental projects. While some will call for intimate inspection, others will restrict viewers from entering the space. FAKE ESTATE serves as an alternative to the traditional art venue, challenging both the artist and the viewer to think within the very small box. Our next exhibition is a group show curated by photographer Glynnis McDaris.
